Books That Make You Dumb

...as opposed to S.M.R.T.

Books That Make You Dumb was an experiment linking favourite books to average college SAT scores across the US. It was by no means an exhaustive study (or even a proper scientific study at all), and even the site owner is careful to point out that correlation ≠ causation... but even so, the list is hilarious.

I'm aware that college SAT's aren't an actual measure of intelligence, and that academic smarts aren't the same as social or emotional smarts (hell, look at Atlas Shrugged all the way over there on the right side!). This study shouldn't really be titled "Books That Make You Dumb", but rather, "Books That Academically Challenged People Enjoy Reading". I'm sure there's an even more politically correct phrase to use, but DAMMIT, it's EARLY and I haven't had breakfast yet.

Even so, thank GOD To Kill A Mockingbird beat Eragon, even by a tiny margin.

  1. Pleases me that Catch-22 is on the higher end.

Still, I have no idea how SATs work and what number would be good and what would be bad.

  2. SAT's are essentially a standardised test across all colleges for the purposes of adjusting results along a bell curve. The higher the score, the better... but not necessarily smarter, considering how all standardised tests are essentially rote-learning prescribed information.
    Thanks for the comment!

That can't be right, Eragon beat the Hobbit and Lord of the Flies. :O

Mockingbird is awesome though, I still have my copy we got from Grammar. :P

Any of your favourites in there Ruz?

  5. @Andy - Of course! All the smart ones!

More seriously... Lord of the Rings, Lord of the Flies, Great Gatsby, Dune, A Wrinkle in Time, On the Road and Ender's Game are all books I love.

I'll look some of them up, I tried Lord Of the Rings once but I couldn't hack it, but then again I was about 15. I should try it again.

Top 20 are some of my favorite books. 100 years of solitude I read in one sitting, it was so good that I gave up a nights sleep to finish it.
